Nike V. Marcus Jordan. V. Addias

The legendary NBA star, Michael Jordan’s son, Marcus Jordan, had announced that he will only be wearing his father’s Air Jordan’s instead of the sponsored adidas kicks. As Marcus Jordan’s school, University of Central Florida, is in its final year of the five-year contract with adidas, this issue becomes a sensitive topic in terms of contract renewal, which was previously estimated to be a three-million dollar deal. As a result of Marcus’ Jordan’s refusal to sport the full adidas sponsored gear which was stated necessary in the sponsorship contract, adidas decided to drop future sponsorship with UCF. According to an email from adidas spokesperson, Andrea Corso, to the Associated Press, “The University of Central Florida has chosen not to deliver on their contractual commitment to adidas…As a result we have chosen not to continue our relationship with them moving forward”. Regardless of family loyalty and justifications on both sides, the result is that all sports teams from UCF are affected by this controversy.

Rising Sun; Jordan 12

Rumours have been circulating the sneakerhead community about Air Jordan XII (12) Retro releases for late 2009, and now we have visible proof. The Air Jordan XII (12) ‘Rising Sun’ takes MJ’s 1996-97 sneaker and amplifies its design. The trademark stitching is still in place, but Jordan Brand added perforations to the white leather on every other section, creating an enhanced sunray effect. To ground out this half-perfed tumbled leather, the swooping lower side panels are made of white patent leather. The only touches of colour appear in the black lining and outsole elements, plus some red on the tongue and heel, as well as the signature metal hook eyelets. Take a look at these and let us know if you like the perforations.

Mars Blackmon*

With my film career slowly but surely, taking off I decide that I would give a little respect to one of my favorite film makers in Spike Lee. I am in now currently shooting a basketball camp in Newark, New Jersey you can come look me up if you want. Sheesh. But I love the collab to today that Michael Jordan and Lee came together and made. Someone that at the time was young to film, and Jordan who had not yet won his first championship. I love the old ads that was put up, so I hope you enjoy it as well.Besides Mike’s on-court success and the fact that the Air Jordan line of sneakers was on another level of style and design brilliance from anything else on the market, there was some marketing genius at work creating a mystique around Michael and his kicks in a way that had never been executed so brilliantly within the realm of athlete endorsements.
Joining Michael in many of these promotional endeavors was Spike Lee (a.k.a. Mars Blackmon), at the time an up and coming film director with a passion for Air Jordan sneakers. The two-man team of Spike and Mike partnered up for a series of commercials and print ads for the sneakers that were not only successful at the time, but have become infamous as some of the most effective and enduring ad campaigns of all time. After the jump, you can take a stroll down memory lane with a nice retrospective of the Michael Jordan/Mars Blackmon era and the marketing revolution that it helped to spark
