It’s been a hotly debated topic in the comments section every time we’ve had a Gucci Mane-related post, drawing lines in the sand between fans claiming regional prefs, or fans fighting about the merits of high-brow vs low-brow raps, or even the Team Jeezy fans vs. the Team Gucci splits. But one thing that keeps coming up again and again is the recognition of this widespread Gucci-Mania that has gone from “the Trap,” to pop radio to indie hipster to music-tv takeover, and more.
Well I got to see what the mania was all about when I was down in Atlanta….Gucci hasvery limited free time, but in between shooting multiple videos, eating lunch at the scripclub (lol), dropping 3 mixtapes at once, and holding court with his rabid fans, Gucci took me to the very housing complex where he grew up and admittedly screwed up in Zone 6/East Atlanta….to chat about many things (his history with T.I., being blacklisted in ATL, his childhood, etc). But in this clip, we talked about the song that surprised me the most.

Stussy recently sat down with the son of famed illustrator Basil Wolverton for a chat regarding his father’s legendary art while producing a feature highlighting its new line of t-shirts showcasing Wolverton’s timeless style. A release for the tees can be expected tomorrow, November 14th while an introduction into the feature can be seen below.
One of the most well-respected cartoonists and illustrators from the golden age of comics book, Basil Wolverton was best known for his grotesque caricatures and work with Mad Magazine. Last Summer, The Gladstone Gallery in New York City exhibited a retrospective of his work, showcasing it for the first time in a gallery setting. For out Holiday Collection, we licensed some of Basil’s famous portraits for a series of t-shirts.

So, yeah, I know, this happened yesterday and it hit the web last night. In fact, the good guy Splash sent it over but I didn’t see it ’til this morning. Why? Because I’m in full Halloween crisis mode. Who knew how hard it was to find a little lycra-spandex in this damn city?
Anyways….Jay-Z addresses Beanie Sigel’s “What They Talkin’ Bout” gripe: “Beanie had a record deal, a record label, a clothing line, and never went platinum. I dont know, in the history of rap, anyone who’s done so much with so little. So I dont know what more you can do for a person at that point…if that’s not pushing a person, s–t!”
But my favorite part was from the interviewer: “Let’s stay in the complaining zone…”
LOL!
But as for the actual Beanie vs Jay-Z debate: it seems that these men are talking at each other but looking in different directions. Hov’s response is not quite about the things Beans mentions in the interview. Meanwhile Beans is griping at Hov without itemizing his own liability.
What with all the job-lossness and forclosuring and brokery happening in 2009, maybe rap’s superstars feel its declassé to throw over the top parties?
In the video above, Weezy celebrates with rhinestone-laced cake (and no, I don’t believe those are diamonds) and champagne in what looks like a dentist office. And after the jump, he tells DJ Drama that he also enjoyed a birthday outing to a Minnesota Vikings game (albeit via private jet). But they still seem to be having fun, and just because the conspicuousness is absent, doesn’t mean the consumption is too.NewLilWayne sent over photos of Baby’s gift this year: a “million-dollar Chopard watch,”which came with a haphazard tattoo on Baby’s arm of Wayne’s birth date in semi-chinese-take-out font. (Overkill since the man already has a Weezy-face tat…but its the thought that counts.) .
If you’ve read (with heavy heart) the recent news coverage from Chicago about a 16 yr. old boy named Derrion Albert, who was killed in broad daylight during a huge brawl right outside of Fenger High School in Roseland…and if you’re seen the disgusting infuriating video of a bunch of teens hitting each other with planks, punching, and kicking in the middle of the street…then you already feel the public outrage that wells up (however momentary) whenever something like this happens. Today, 3 young men were charged with the murder of Derrion Albert, but folks are still rattled. And rightly so. Nas posted this open letter on Global Grind in reaction to the violence
Dear Young Warriors fighting the wrong wars! …
We chose the dumbest things to go the hardest for. I remember seeing deaths over 8 ball jackets, fila’s , and name plate chains. Deaths over “he say she say”!!!!! “I’m from This block or I’m from that block”, or “my moms n pops is f*cked up now the whole world gotta pay”!!!
I remember feeling like I was the hardest “n*gga” breathin. And I couldn’t wait to prove it. But let’s think. What r we really proving?? And proving what to who??….
We are WASTING more and more time. We gotta get on our jobs and take over the world. Cuz This movie left the theaters years ago, Juice, Menace, boys n the hood , blood n blood out, Belly!
